16th Kondius Berliner Marathonstaffel (marathon relay) results, 16.11.2008 (Berlin)

With 795 relays and altogether 4184 the 16th edition of the marathon-relay in Berlin reported a new record in participation figures. Despite a missing title sponsor: Hamburg marathon 2009 will take place and registration is now open.

On April, 26th 2009 the 24th version of the Hamburg marathon will be run, even without a title sponsor.  The IAAF gave the marathon in the German North the “Golden Road Race Label” which only receive the races with highest quality. Last year approx. 20.000 runners and 800.00 spectators enjoyed the atmosphere on the fast course.

The race organisers lost the title sponsor, which discontinued the contract after the 2008 edition of the marathon. However, now there are enough sponsors could be acquired to secure the realisation of the event in 2009.

Sebastian Hallmann and Simret Restle win “Sparkassen-Cross” in Pforzheim

This weekend the first major German cross-country race took place in Pforzheim. The race was also the opener of the new established German Cross-Cup with races in Neukirchen, Pforzheim and Darmstadt.
In the men’s race (10K) the reigning German 10.000m Champion Sebastian Hallmann secured victory ahead of the reigning Cross Champ Stephan Hohl. Those 2 made the pace together with the eventually Junior-race (8K) winner Thorsten Baumeister for the better part of the race and the gap to 3rd place Jan Förster and 4th place Steffen Uliczka (reigning steeple champion) was pretty large.
In the women’s race (7K) Simret Restle became the winner with a strong finish, only 4 seconds behind: Julia Viellehner. Also in the women’s race a Junior made the pace for a long time: Julia Hiller pushed from the very beginning, but had to run 2.000m less than the women from the main category. Also the European marathon champion Ulrike Maisch competed on “foreign terrain”. After a long injury break she is just having her coming back and is motivated to qualify for next year’s world championship marathon team.
For the cross-specialists it was the first opportunity to show their capabilities and to send a first sign towards a qualification for the European Cross Country Championships on 9th of December in Brussels.

Alexander Lubina announces end of competitive sports career

On last Sunday, November 2nd Alexander Lubina stepped back from his career in competitive sports. The 28-year old that was troubled with several injuries in recent years said, he does not see a chance anymore to compete in next year’s “home” world championships in Berlin after another stress fracture which was discovered one week ahead of his planned start in the Frankfurt marathon.
In spring 2003 Alex suffered his first stress fracture and since this time he could not train continuously for one year. Altogether he suffered 5 or 6 stress fractures. Until recently, it looked as like he is on a good way back. In the Essen marathon he paced the leaders for 30km (at 2:18h pace) without bigger problems and was motivated to compete in the Frankfurt marathon. However, a MRI few days before the race showed another fracture.
The decision to quit his career was also influenced by an attractive job offer. Alex will still continue running, but on another level: “My second love is orienteering and maybe I can improve in this direction.”. Furthermore he wants to improve his marathon PB of 2:21:27 after 1-2 years recovery to a sub 2:20 time.
The PB’s of Alexander Lubina:
3000m 7:54 Rhede
5000m 13:38 Kassel
10000m 28:29,15 Camaiore, ITA
10km 29:02 Bad Liebenzell
Halfmarathon 64:20 Bad Liebenzell

Irina Mikitenko wins Women’s World Marathon Majors title

After Ethiopian Gete Wami placed “only” 6th in the 2008 ING New York City Marathon, both Irina Mikitenko and Gete Wami had 65 points in the World Marathon Majors series 2007/2008. The five race directors had to decide who is the winner and did so in an unanimous vote. Irina Mikitenko was made the champion and she now shares 1 million US-$ with the winner of the Men’s World Marathon Majors title, Martin Lel, who was already the winner before the NYC-marathon.

35th real Berlin Marathon 2008: 2:22:16h (21th place)

I took a lot of time to think about the Berlin marathon and analyze the whole race, the preparation and all circumstances that might have influenced my performance. With the start of the new training season I can conclude my analysis and make the adjustments to improve next time.
After all I should not be disappointed with my 2nd marathon. I improved my PB by more than 2 1/2 minutes and I got 21st in the 2nd biggest marathon in the world (the biggest marathon in Europe). The thing that made me a bit mad, was the fact that I was on sub-2:20h course for more than 37km. After my analysis I think, how I can run a sub-2:20 in the close future.
But now to the analysis itself:
general preparation
The preparation was quite good. The 5-week altitude camp went really, really well and I only missed three days during the whole camp because of an issue with my right foot. The last two weeks before the marathon were not as good and after the German 10K road running championships I again got problems with the foot and was never 100% pain free. It was only an odd feeling in my foot but still before a marathon that’s not a good sign. Also I could feel something in my foot few kilometers into the marathon and the I guess the Biomechanics suffered quite a bit because of that.
weather conditions /course
Well, those are the things you can’t change as a run, but both the course and the weather was pretty much perfect. The course is fast: flat, few corners - only the looong straights get endless at the end. There was almost now wind and the temperature at the start was just perfect, even if the sun heated up the streets a bit towards the end of the marathon.
pacing strategy
My 5K-splits were as follows: 16:31 + 16:21 + 16:31 + 16:49 + 16:48 + 16:36 + 16:36 + 17:44 + 8:20 (2,195k). The two halfs were 69:52 + 72:24. Until km 37/38 I was right on 2:20h pace but then struggled a lot on the last 4km.
Until around km 13 I was running with the leading women (at that point those were some Ethiopians), but then I decided to slow down a bit because they were running towards a projected 2:17h and that seemed to be a bit too fast for me. Consequently I had to run on my own until around km 22, when Irina Mikitenko including her 3 pacers came from behind. I settled in this group and we were closing the gap to the women lead group. I was feeling pretty ok in the group - it was a big motivation to run next to Irina and with her pacers around her I had a lot wind-shadow. However, the pacers steadily increased the pace (Irina ran a big negative split) and I had to decide if I continue to hang on or to run my own pace. Around km 34 I made the decision to run my own pace, but this might have been a bit too late. I could still hold the pace steady until approx. km37 but again I was on my own and the Mikitenko-group was drifting away. And then at around km 37/38 I really started to suffer. The tank was empty and I just wanted to make it to the finish. The things I can still remember are, that 1) I was passed by the Ethiopian woman that eventually took 2nd at around km 40 and at km 40,5 I passed the 3rd German, but I should only realise it after the finish that I was 3rd German. All the other memories of the last kilometers are gone. At some point I saw the stars and I guess I was not too far away from loosing consciousness - I can’t even remember how I ran through the Brandenburg gate!!
Of course it’s always easy to say afterwards, but if I would have known before that Irina is running such a time (2:19:19h) I would propably have staid in her shadow for as long as possible from the first kilometer onwards.
fueling during the race
Getting the right fuel during a marathon is crucial for every marathon runner. For my part I only took fluids during the race but there were some problems in getting my bottles in the later stages of the race. On the first supply points I got my bottles without bigger problems and at one point I even got the bottle from a bike official, that stood right in front of the table with my bottle. The problem was to get the fluids at the supply points on km 30 and 35. There were some officials standing right in front of the table and it was impossible to reach the much required carbohydrate-refuel. So, between km 25 and 36 I didn’t get a single bottle (fortunately I had someone at km 36 who could give me a prepared extra bottle). The fact that I was without a proper supply during that stage might be one reason for my slump at the end of the race. In future marathons I might also try to take some carbo-gels to avoid a lack of energy, but I will have to try that in training first of course.
Conclusion
It’s marathon! You learn something in every single marathon. The important thing is to make things better next time and I am now sure how I can improve in the next marathon.

27th Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon report + results, 26.10.2008

The Frankfurt marathon 2008 saw a lot of great performances in almost perfect conditions (only some wind disturbed the runners during some parts).
In the men’s race the unknown 20-year old Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot ran a new course record of 2:07:21 in his first ever marathon. Also for the German marathonscene it was a big day, because in the men’s race two Germans could go sub 2:15! The 25-year old Andre Pollmächer could fulfill the hopes of his eagerly anticipated marathon debut and finished with a time of 2:14:18. However, after the race he told that the last 4km he was running like in trance and felt really bad - close to loose consciousness. Until km 33 he was running together with the reigning German marathon champion Martin Beckmann. At the end the much more experienced Beckmann finished in a personal best of 2:14:30. The 31-year old felt as good as never before in a marathon and thinks that he can still improve in the next marathons. Both Andre Pollmächer and Martin Beckmann have a good chance of being selected for the 2009 world championships in Berlin in fact they are already set if they don’t get injured or Pollmächer is running 10.000m) where Germany will compete with a marathon team also on the men’s side.
The women’s race was won by Beijing 10000m-Olympian Sabrina Mockenhaupt (GER) in a time of 2:26:22. This is an improvement of over 3minutes of her personal best, which she set in last years marathon debut. Mockenhaupt took the lead from the very beginning and always looked in control of the race. Nevertheless she stated that on the last 4km she was lucky that she had a comfortable lead over her competitors because she was getting really tired. She was confident that she could have run a sub 2:26 with a more steady pace. Second place went to Russian Olesya Nurgalieva with a PB of 2:27:37 ahead of third place Melanie Kraus with 2:28:20. For the 34-year old German it was the second fastest time ever (PB: 2:27:58 in Berlin 2000). Considering the fact that it was already her 3rd marathon this year and she had only few months to recover from the Olympic marathon it is a respectable time. Kraus had problems to start the engine in the first half of the race and as a concequence she ran a negative split (1:14:45+1:13:35). She can now hope to be selected for next year’s world champs marathon in the German capital Berlin (qualification time: 2:32).
